Load-bearing capacity
What defines Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 is its California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of 80, a strong measure of how much load it can carry and how well it holds together.
Road base · 09.01
Our strongest road base. CBR80 compacts into a solid, stable, water-resistant foundation for roads, carparks, driveways and slabs.
Quick answer
With a California Bearing Ratio of 80, Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 is the toughest grade in our yard, and CBR80 and above is the mark for heavy-duty, high-traffic pavements. Laid 100–150mm deep and compacted, it forms a solid, water-resistant, low-upkeep foundation for carparks, driveways, road building and the layer beneath concrete slabs or pavers.

Compare grades
CBR (California Bearing Ratio) tells you how much load a compacted base can carry. A higher number means a stronger base.
| Grade | CBR | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 | 80 | Heavy-duty, high-traffic pavements and road building (this product) |
| Road Base 2.3 – CBR45 | 45 | Standard roads, driveways and parking areas |
| Road Base 2.5 – CBR15 | 15 | Landscape levelling, paver bases and light-duty areas |
What defines Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 is its California Bearing Ratio (CBR) of 80, a strong measure of how much load it can carry and how well it holds together.
Road Base 2.1 is designed to resist water, which lowers the risk of the material breaking down in the elements. Through rain, flooding or high moisture it stays intact and dependable, making it a strong all-weather choice.
Anything carrying heavy or constant traffic, like roads, carparks and commercial driveways, as well as the foundation layer under slabs and pavers.
Not always. CBR45 (Type 2.3) is the usual choice for a standard driveway. Go with 2.1 where heavy vehicles or lots of traffic will use the surface.
Plan on 100–150mm compacted. At that depth, one cubic metre covers roughly 7–10 m². Order a little extra, as it compacts down.
