Our road base is made from blue rock, better known as blue metal: crushed stone and fines that bind together for consistent compaction. Use it to build firm ground in heavy-traffic areas or anywhere a compaction standard applies.
Quick answer
Three grades, matched to the load they’ll carry: 2.1 (CBR80) for heavy traffic, 2.3 (CBR45) for everyday driveways and slabs, and 2.5 (CBR15) for light-duty fill. Each is crushed rock and fines that only binds into a firm layer when it’s damp and machine compacted.
| Product | Best for | Typical depth |
|---|---|---|
| Road Base 2.1 – CBR80 | Heavy traffic, compaction standard required | 100–150mm compacted |
| Road Base 2.3 – CBR45 | Home driveways, paths, slab bases | 100–150mm compacted |
| Road Base 2.5 – CBR15 | Sub-base, fill, access tracks | As specified |
It’s a 40mm crushed rock blend that performs best when dampened and machine compacted. For access roads, driveways and paving sub-base, recycled concrete is the cheaper alternative.

“Very good service provided by Jimel Transport. Ordered road base and it was delivered to Ipswich promptly at short notice. I will continue to use them and recommend others to give them a try.”
CBR (California Bearing Ratio) tells you how much load a compacted material can carry. The higher the number, the stronger the base, so CBR80 is our strongest grade and CBR15 our lightest duty.
Most home driveways and slab bases only need Road Base 2.3 (CBR45). Step up to 2.1 (CBR80) if trucks or heavy vehicles will use the surface regularly.
Spread road base in layers of about 100mm. Dampen and compact each layer with a plate compactor or roller before the next goes on, because dry road base won’t bind.
