A bumpy or patchy lawn usually doesn’t need replacing, just a top dress: a thin layer that fills the low spots and feeds the grass as it grows up through it.

Two top dressings, two jobs. Fertilised Top Dress is a nutrient-rich organic blend that revives tired lawns; USGA Top Dress Sand is clean sand for drainage and levelling. Either way, keep it to 5–10mm so the grass can push through.

What’s the best season to top dress?
You can top dress any time of year, but lawns bounce back quickest in the warmer months from spring to early autumn, while the grass is actively growing through the new layer.
How thick should top dressing be?
Spread 5–10mm and work it in with the back of a rake so the grass tips still show. Fill deeper low spots over two or three light applications.
Fertilised Top Dress or USGA sand: which one do I need?
Needs a feed as well as a level? Fertilised Top Dress. Drainage is the bigger worry, or the soil is already rich? USGA Top Dress Sand.
